Stockport has it all! We're close to both the city and the countryside, we have great schools, award winning parks and fantastic transport links! We have the river, thriving village shops, a farm, a football club, cafe culture, big tesco's, allotments, museums, the trans-penine trail, top-ranking restaurants, the blue pyramid, galleries, the air-raid shelters, theatres, the viaduct , conservation areas , nature walks, old fashioned family values, a community spirit and now even our very own Primark!
But how many of us know about the hidden gem that is Vernon Mill Artist Studios, in the heart of our town centre?
It's a thriving hub of keen local artists who open their studio doors to the public most weekends, offering demonstrations, classes, original art for sale and exhibitions and you can even guarantee that they'll be plenty of artist's on hand to discuss their work with you too.
I have worked with some of the artist's in residence here previously, when I worked for The Blyth Gallery in Manchester- including bitumen artist John Booth who rapidly aplplies bitumen to the canvas creating colourful unique pieces of work, full of joyous expression.
A few other artists of note include Alan Knight and Jan Cartain. Cartainworks in acrylic, oils, watercolour and pastels to create both landscape and figurative work. Alan Knight employs a technique of thickly applying his paint to the canvas using a pallette knife. He recently exhibited work at Stockport Art gallery and currently offers knife-painting clases on Tuesday afternoons.

Also, check out Joan Bradley's charming watercolours, Richard Brown's sculpture and 3D design, the lively designs of Malcom Croft and the beautful paintings by Judith Ann Donaghy, whose work I particulary enjoy.
I had some really interesting chats with some of the artists there recently, they were very generous with their time and more than happy to share their ideas and processes with their visitors.
Yep, Stockport , much like Gerard Depardieu, has got it all!
