Film Poster Design

These are some designs I am working on for a poster brief. I began by creating imagery from the text using variousprocesses including charcoal through letter-forms,smudging and erasing, photocopying, inverting, printing onto acetate, photographing on a lightbox, projecting using and OHP and layering acetate over windows. I also photographed lots of telephaph poles and wires which  appeared throughout the film and I felt captured the of themes disconnection, communication and isolation.

Record Sleeve

Some ideas for my version of a record sleeve for Lana Del Rey's single, Video Games. I wanted to experiment with photoshop to further developed my ability to combine computer based image  manipulation with handmade work. I do prefer the final magery to look more handmade than computer generated so I drew the background image using chalk pastels, and then combined this with a hand drawn title 'Video Games' which loosly resembles a tattoo, and the related themes therefore of adolescence, love, rebellon, commitment, devotion, pain and disilluson. I need to improve my understandng of combining text with image. I began this process with the title but wasn't then sure how to best intergrate the artist's names. I had chosen a typeface that was reminscent of vntage typewriting but it still looked 'plonked on' , rather than invoking the nostalia I had hoped for. A more modern font and colour embedded the title better into the piece.

Four Book Covers

These are purely computer manipulated, not using any handmade collage on this set....just layering imagery and scribbling the titles over! I like the choice of images as they create new meaning when placed together. The more simple layouts are more effective than the confusing busy ones. As I become more confident in layering and arranging imagery on photoshop I need to rely less on found images and more upon made images to further personalise the outcomes.  think the mages would be lifted by the introducton of shots of colour and some of the title text appears lost.

A Visual Self Portrait

These are the sereis of images I made about visual self portraits. As I see my main role as being 'a mum', I focused on that as my starting point, using phrases and imagery from my daily life to enhance the pictures. I made collages and layered them using photoshop. I'm fairly pleased with the outcomes, as I am being fair to myself in that I've not had much experience on photoshop to date, but my next aim is to bed the text in better to the images. At the moment some of the typed words are floating on top of the images and not working the way I would like.

When Emma met Photoshop

I scanned in a few of my drawings and collages and paintings and photos today and had my first ever play on photoshop- excting times ahead I think!

Life Drawing , Week One

Started the life drawing course this week- to kick off we did some consecutive line  charcoal and pencil drawings layering each on top of the next. I then rubbed these drawings out with a paper towel to create a mid-grey ground, which I then drew on top of again using chalk pastel and a variety of drawing techniques including continuous line, left-handed drawing, two handed drawing, and drawing not looking at the paper! I thought the effect created images that were refreshing and full of energy, and  captured the essence of the movement of model.

We then made a series of 10-minute drawings using charcoal and an eraser on a mid tone charcoal ground, bocking in areas of tone to build up an image. It was difficult to resist the urge to use line in the drawings!

Finally we made eight very quick drawings using oil pastel that was then covered in quink ink , causing a resist effect . We then drew again into the ink using bleach. Some of the images were really simple but very effective. Sometimes the highlight effect of the bleach succeeded in implying a full solid human form.

My Drawing with Light

These  are a  few images of the work I made for a project experimenting with drawing with light. I used over-head projecters, photography, slide-making , drawing, textiles and other methods and materials  to produce the images. The work began by collecting fragments from the studio and manipulating and working with the materials to create pictures with light.
